Mobilizing, organizing and engaging one thousand (1000 ) young girls and women to meaningfully participate in the Save Bugoma Forest Campaign 2020 to restore 6,000 hectares of forest cover conversion into sugarcane plantations, a fact that once allowed will render Bugoma forest approach a tipping point of ecological collapse. Since 2016 many illegal attempts have continued to be engineered to reduce the vast forest cover to its former glory. Hoima Sugar limited is targeting close to 6,000 hectares of forest cover conversion into sugarcane plantations, Replacing the forest with sugar cane grass which will accelerate food insecurity of the forest-dependent communities, worsen climate change disasters, negative affect towards tourism potential of the district and region and deplete the provisioning of international public goods derived from the forest (IPGS) derived from the forest. The sugar plantation threats coupled with the threats that will come along with the oil roads planned to pass in the forest will not only lead to a humanitarian emergency but also trigger an environmental disaster.
Bugoma forest, which is a tourism hub and home to about 600 chimpanzees and migratory corridor for large mammals, is currently under threat. This follows a decision by the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) to clear Hoima Sugar Limited to cultivate sugarcane on 9.24sq.m in Bugoma forest, Kikuube district in western Uganda and has been stopped Save Bugoma Forest. Since Bugoma forest was Gazetted as a forest reserve in 1932, Bugoma is a tropical high forest ,Bugoma hosts 600 chimpanzees, endangered bird species such as the Nahan's Francolin and the African grey parrots, It is also a migratory route for wild animals, including elephants connecting Budongo and Murchison to the north and Kibale as well as Queen Elizabeth to the south ,a catchment for rivers that drain into Lake Albert where oil has been discovered, a sink for waste gases during oil mining. Bugoma is also a rain maker, supporting thousands of farmers who depend on rain-fed agriculture and In a campaign code-named Bugoma series, Vision Group highlighted the rich tourism potential of the 41ha Bugoma forest and its role as a catchment for rivers and Lake Albert.
Bugoma Women Farmers Association Uganda activism in partnership with community and non-government organization environmental activists on Save Bugoma Forest Campaign 2020 to restore 6,000 hectares of forest cover conversion into sugarcane plantations will continue to mobilize organize and engage citizens across the community to demand government stop immediately stop the ongoing intended sugarcane plantations in Bugoma Forest and also continue to collect Number of Signatures with target of 50,000 to support our petition on Saving Bugoma Forest from Hoima Sugar limited to acquire 6,000 hectares of forest cover conversion into sugarcane plantations. The distortion of Bugoma Forest has made Uganda to lose credibility in the respect and implementation of International Conventions including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) of 1992, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) which Uganda ratified in 1993 with the objective to regulate levels of greenhouse gas concentration in the atmosphere; not forgetting the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). Bugoma Women Farmers Association Uganda in partnership with National Association of Professional Environmentalists (NAPE) have been currently working on the Save Bugoma Forest Campaign 2020 .Following the rampant deforestation threats we have spearheading the struggle sued the degraders resulting in halting of the forest degradation attempts until final settlement of the issues at hand and the attempts have continued to be engineered to reduce the vast forest cover to its former glory. Hoima Sugar limited is targeting close to 6,000 hectares of forest cover conversion into sugarcane plantations, a fact that once allowed will render Bugoma forest approach a tipping point of ecological collapse , we need to stop these illegal practices of deforestation in Uganda today through Save Bugoma Forest Campaign 2020 .
