Youth-led Agroforestry in Nepal: Reviving the Chiuri Tree

Name of Organization: Youth for Good Nepal

Region: South Asia

Country: Nepal

Project Category: Nature-based Solutions

Funding Size: USD 500.00

Project Description:

This project addresses the intertwined challenges of environmental degradation and socio-economic marginalization within the indigenous Chepang community in Benighat Rorang, Nepal. We aim to restore degraded ecosystems by planting 250 native Chiuri trees (Diploknema butyracea), which are essential for stabilizing fragile, landslide-prone slopes and preventing soil erosion. Simultaneously, the initiative empowers the next generation by training 20 Chepang youth, at least 30% of whom will be female, in sustainable agroforestry and tree care. By establishing a community environment club and developing market linkages for Chiuri products, the project fosters long-term stewardship and creates sustainable livelihood opportunities. This holistic approach revitalizes a culturally vital species while building climate resilience and food security for one of Nepal’s most vulnerable populations.

Proposed Impact on Community:

Environmental Resilience: Reduction in soil erosion and landslide risks through the reforestation of 250 Chiuri saplings on fragile slopes.

Economic Empowerment: Creation of sustainable income sources and food security for Chepang households through Chiuri product market linkages.

Capacity Building: Specialized agroforestry training for 20 local youth, ensuring the community has the skills to manage their natural resources independently.

Cultural Preservation: Conservation of the Chiuri tree, which is deeply rooted in Chepang heritage, medicine, and daily sustenance.

Motivation for Taking On the Project:

Our motivation stems from the urgent need to support the Chepang community, which faces 90% food insecurity and is increasingly threatened by climate-driven disasters like floods and landslides. The rapid decline of the Chiuri tree has not only weakened the local ecosystem but has also stripped the community of a primary source of food and income. As a youth-led organization, Youth For Good-Nepal is driven to bridge the gap between indigenous knowledge and climate action, ensuring that marginalized communities are not left behind in the face of the global climate crisis.
